For the girlfriend to be more important than the wife and giving the marriage a chance (even given what has lead up to that point) suggests this relationship is several months old and was initiated very early after the separation. Not cool in my book. Sounds like you just said "fuck it" and then went and followed thru with absolutely no intention of giving the marriage a chance to heal.
